Juan Hernandez Rodriguez, 41, of Dumfries, was found inside of his overturned vehicle at Telegraph Road and Barnwell Drive following the crash just after 10:10 p.m. on Thursday, May 9, the Stafford County Sheriff's Office said.
When Deputy Suh arrived, he saw a communications pole completely destroyed and blocking the street. The road was shut down as Deputy Suh was able to help safely remove Hernandez Rodriguez from the vehicle, who was not seriously injured, police said.
The driver said his brakes failed causing him to crash, however, Deputy Suh suspected there might be another cause. Hernandez Rodriguez's breath wreaked of alcohol and he eventually would admit to drinking four Coronas minutes before the accident, the sheriff's office said.
A empty beer can was located among the debris, police said.
After conducting field sobriety tests, Hernandez Rodriguez was arrested and charged with driving under the influence. He was held at Rappahannock Regional Jail until sober. The road would remain closed as crews cleaned up the mess, which lasted until 8:34 the following morning.
